Hastings St. Cecilia Takes “Shrek The Musical”

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – The students and staff of Hastings St. Cecilia are preparing to show off all their hard work with the opening of their spring musical this weekend.

The auditorium has been transformed, creating Duloc’s fairy tale land for “Shrek The Musical.”

Sessions are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 6 p.m.

When selecting this show, the makers said they were looking for one that was really recognizable and fun.

They said it helped students find it more enjoyable to be able to edit a film on stage.

“What’s really cool about the musical that the movie doesn’t have is a lot more background information that isn’t part of the movie, so it’s not a copy of the movie, there’s a lot of cool things added to the musical that you’ve never seen before, which is really fun,” said Miranda Brown, one of the musical’s three directors.

For those unfamiliar with Shrek, it’s about a little ogre, who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a cunning donkey and a feisty princess who resists his rescue. But that’s not all, there’s a hot-tempered villain, a cookie with an attitude, and more than a dozen other fairy-tale misfits.

It’s one of the biggest castings they’ve had with around 46 students and another 10 for the crew.

“It’s really cool to get so many students together for the show,” Brown said.

“New this year we have a live orchestra pit, this year we have 12 people playing which adds another layer of excitement, the leads are also amazing singers and actors, some of their big scenes when they’re together, you just sit there and think ‘that’s so cool,’ said director Katherine Welk.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students (K-12). PK and below are free.

The first three rows are reserved for VIP seating and include a snack pack for the show. Limited tickets available. You have until Friday noon to get these tickets online and for VIP.
