Concert to showcase the 1940s and beyond

The Westport Astronomical Society hosts Westport Observatory Director Bob Meadows at 8 p.m. Tuesday for the Stellafane 2022 Report at an online event as part of the society’s free science lecture series.

Meadows will talk about his recent attendance at the 86th Convention of Amateur Telescope Makers 2022 Stellafane Convention. It will also report on all the latest innovations in amateur telescopes.

The event will be hosted in the Astronomical Society’s classroom, as a Zoom webinar and live stream on the Astronomical Society’s YouTube channel.

People are encouraged to participate, ask questions and be part of the live meeting.

Historical Society, 1940s Concert

Tickets are on sale for the Weston Historical Society’s 1940s Outdoor Concert.

The fundraiser will take place from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on September 17 at the company’s property, 104 Weston Road. The rainy date is September 18.

It will feature performances by Vince Giordano with the band Mini Hawks 7, as well as Miss Maybell and the Jazz Age Artists with Judkins and Nalepka.

No outside alcohol will be allowed. Outside food should be limited to support the food vendors who will be on site. The Baked and Sauced Airstream and a food truck from JR’s Deli and Grille will be there.

Attendees will be able to listen to music, see classic 1940s cars, and take the opportunity to get a first look at the newly restored Coley Homestead and its 1940s kitchen.

It costs $40 per person for historical society members or $45 if they wish to use one of the society’s padded chairs for the event. It costs $50 per person for non-members, or $55 to use one of the chairs. Children 10 and under are free.

Tickets that include a cushioned chair will only be available for purchase online until September 10. People can also bring their own garden chairs.

Coastal Advisors, a boutique and independent wealth management firm, has hired a chief marketing officer, expanding its management team.

Deirdre Childs joins the team, bringing 17 years in marketing and business development.

Previously, Childs held various in-house leadership positions and worked as a consultant supporting global companies and major brands in expanding their marketing and communications programs, including Dove, Broadridge, Patagonia and Pepsi.

She looks forward to bringing her talents to the firm, where she will also support its client engagement, business development and branding activities.

New Artist Exhibits at Westport Bookstore

Artist Elizabeth Petrie-Devoll is Westport Book Shop’s guest exhibitor for the month of August.

Petrie-Devoll is exhibiting 11 original assemblage artworks through August 31. All artwork is available for purchase.

Petrie-Devoll creates new art from old objects with a practice that animates history and questions the supposed boundary between past and present. She works from her home studio in Westport and regularly exhibits artwork in and around Fairfield County.

She is a board member of the Westport Artist Collective. She holds an undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis’ School of Fine Arts.

Petrie-Devoll spent more than a decade as an art director on Madison Avenue in New York City, mostly at advertising company BBDO. She spent 10 years as director of education and artist-in-residence at the Westport Historical Society.
